Many of the BRE Group's buildings had outlived their original purpose having been built in 1996. Therefore, there was the need to refresh the spaces and to continue showcasing sustainability best practice. Therefore, 30 years after completion, the original Building 16, plus neighbouring Building 17, were earmarked for refurbishment. The resulting end product created an Open Innovation Hub as well as reduced, but enhanced, office spaces for BRE’s workers.

A ‘long life, loose fit’ approach has been taken with the fitout to enable those occupying the spaces to personalise as well as enable it to be adaptable to future working trends. The BRE office space features familiar workstation areas as well as new quiet areas, informal collaboration spaces and networking areas.

The scheme naturally had sustainability at its heart, achieving BREEAM Excellent (Refurbishment and Fit Out) certification. BRE are monitoring the usage of the building, reviewing its quality and performance and using the information to guide future best practice.
